In severe cases of rosacea (a chronic inflammatory skin condition), a patient may develop a skin disorder known as rhinophyma. Rhinophyma causes an overgrowth of the soft tissue of the nose. It presents as a large mass on the end of the nose with red bumps that may disfigure the nose, making it larger and asymmetrical at times. Sometimes it is called an alcoholic or drinker's nose, but there is actually no proven connection between drinking alcohol and people who develop rhinophyma. Rhinophyma occurs more often in men than women and most patients are between 35– 60 years old. Our board-certified plastic surgeon and dermatologists, serving Greater Chicago area patients at Oak Dermatology in Naperville, IL perform effective procedures to remove the affected tissue, reshape the nose, and improve the patient's appearance.

At Oak Dermatology we expertly combine surgery, electrosurgery, and lasers to treat rhinophyma. As an outpatient procedure, we relax patients and minimize discomfort with local anesthesia, like lidocaine, in the treatment area. Then, a curette is used to debulk the excess and unwanted tissue, followed by electrocautery to help smooth the curves and restore the natural contours of the nose. Finally, a laser helps smooth the skin and the nose shape. The length of the procedure will vary, depending on how much tissue needs to be removed.

I have been a patient of Dr. Sharon Fang's for 25+ years. I can't say enough about her care. She is EXTREMELY thorough and takes her time. After recently discovering basal cell on my face, they sent me to Dr. Bhatia within two days..........for MOHS procedure. A few days later, I saw Dr. Daw, the plastic surgeon, to begin the repair. The doctors, nurses, front office staff, billing, etc..............are remarkable.

My mother had basal cell carcinoma on her chin. We decided to come to Oak as they were highly recommended. Our first visit with Dr Bhatia was extremely pleasant. Dr Bhatia and his staff are very kind, knowledgeable and thoughtful. We decided to proceed with the MOHS procedure. Due to the amount that was removed the plastic surgeon had to repair and suture my mom’s pchin. He did such a great job!! It has healed well and you would never be able to tell that she had anything done to her chin. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND OAK DERMATOLOGY IN NAPERVILLE!!!!

About Us
Does rhinophyma affect breathing?

In severe cases, rhinophyma can cause nasal deformities that may partially obstruct the nasal passages, potentially affecting breathing. The thickened skin and tissue growth can alter the shape of the nose, sometimes leading to difficulty breathing. If nasal obstruction becomes significant, surgical intervention may be necessary to restore proper function. In most cases, however, rhinophyma primarily causes cosmetic changes rather than functional issues with breathing.

Is rhinophyma more common in men or women?

Rhinophyma is significantly more common in men than in women. While rosacea affects both genders, men are more likely to develop the advanced stages of the condition that lead to rhinophyma. This may be due to hormonal differences or because men are less likely to seek early treatment for rosacea. The condition typically becomes noticeable in men between the ages of 40 and 60, although it can develop earlier or later in life.

What complications can arise from untreated rhinophyma?

Untreated rhinophyma can lead to several complications, both physical and psychological. As the nose becomes more enlarged and misshapen, it can result in discomfort and social embarrassment, leading to anxiety or depression. Additionally, the thickened skin can make it difficult to maintain proper hygiene, increasing the risk of infections. In rare cases, the excessive tissue growth may obstruct nasal passages, complicating breathing or making certain medical treatments more difficult.
