Cancer can be a frightening word, but for individuals diagnosed with skin cancer, Oak Dermatology may have the answer with Mohs surgery. Mohs surgery is a technique that gently and meticulously removes cancerous skin cells. The process aims to remove as little of your healthy skin tissue and has the most success for skin cancer eradication. Performed by board-certified Mohs surgeons Dr. Jeffrey T.S. Hsu and Dr. Ashish Bhatia, this surgical procedure addresses squamous and basal cell carcinomas and melanomas or tumors. Our board-certified dermatological surgeons are specially trained in the Mohs technique and fellowship-trained in identifying and removing skin cancers. We begin the surgery by thoroughly removing the malignant cells one layer at a time. After every layer, we analyze the skin tissue to determine whether cancer is still present. Reach out to our Naperville, Itasca, or Joliet, IL location now to set up a consultation.

During Mohs surgery, our surgeon will use local anesthetics to numb the affected area before incisions are made for removal. Once the area is numb, a small layer of tissue is removed, frozen, stained, and cut for microscopic slides for in-house pathology review. This tissue determines the exact location of the cancerous cells, creating a map for the surgeon to follow and repeat until the slides show clean tissue and no remaining cancer. The systematic process of examining the tissue and removing skin cancer at its root has a 98 – 99 percent cure rate. The completion of the procedure will leave a wound. We will decide how to repair the wound based on your input. Healing solutions vary, from letting it heal by itself with easy sutures to close the wound to more complicated graft operations for larger wounds.

We will provide you with instructions on wound care. The wound must be cleaned daily, moistened with an ointment, and covered with a small dressing.

Scheduled for a Mohs Surgery procedure. From start to finish everyone was very courteous and caring. The procedure was done with great professionalism and I just appreciated the whole visit. I would recommend Oak Dermatology.

My husband had a spot on his right ear that would not heal. When it became painful for him to sleep on his right side, we started looking for a dermatologist. We chose Oak Dermatology based on the 5-star rating it had from over 200 people!! We called and made TWO appointments - one for Jack and one for me - with the Itasca office, just five minutes from our home! We were given full-body scans. A biopsy of the spot on Jack’s ear showed he had basal cell carcinoma. A MOHS procedure revealed how much the cancer had spread. The ear repair was complicated by the fact that Jack has a cochlear implant. At every step of our journey, we have been treated by capable, caring doctors and staff. Thank you Dr. Al-Hadidi, Dr. Bhatia, and Dr. Daw. Thank you Cynthia, Georgia, Chelsea, Kaitlin and Jake. We feel so lucky that we found Oak Dermatology!

My mother had basal cell carcinoma on her chin. We decided to come to Oak as they were highly recommended. Our first visit with Dr Bhatia was extremely pleasant. Dr Bhatia and his staff are very kind, knowledgeable and thoughtful. We decided to proceed with the MOHS procedure. Due to the amount that was removed the plastic surgeon had to repair and suture my mom’s pchin. He did such a great job!! It has healed well and you would never be able to tell that she had anything done to her chin. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND OAK DERMATOLOGY IN NAPERVILLE!!!!

I have been a patient of Dr. Sharon Fang's for 25+ years. I can't say enough about her care. She is EXTREMELY thorough and takes her time. After recently discovering basal cell on my face, they sent me to Dr. Bhatia within two days..........for MOHS procedure. A few days later, I saw Dr. Daw, the plastic surgeon, to begin the repair. The doctors, nurses, front office staff, billing, etc..............are remarkable.

About Us
Does Mohs surgery hurt?

Most individuals experience minimal pain during Mohs surgery due to the use of local anesthesia. The anesthesia numbs the area, making the procedure generally well-tolerated with little to no discomfort. After the surgery, patients typically report minor discomfort, which usually doesn't require prescription pain medication. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, are often sufficient to manage any post-operative pain. Our team will provide detailed instructions on pain management to ensure your recovery is as comfortable as possible.

Does Mohs surgery leave a scar?

The presence and appearance of a scar after Mohs surgery depend on several factors, including the size and location of the treated area and the individual's skin type. While scarring is an inevitable part of the healing process, our surgeons are highly skilled in techniques to minimize scarring. They will carefully plan and execute the procedure to ensure the best cosmetic outcome. Additionally, after your skin has healed, we may offer scar revision treatments to further improve the appearance of any scars. It's important to follow post-operative care instructions to support optimal healing.

Will I need more than one surgery?

The need for additional surgeries depends on the specifics of each case. During your initial consultation, our experienced team will assess your condition and discuss the likelihood of needing more than one surgery. Mohs surgery is highly effective, with a cure rate of up to 99% for certain skin cancers. However, in some cases, a second procedure may be necessary if all cancerous cells are not removed in the first surgery. Our goal is to achieve complete removal of cancerous tissue with as few procedures as possible.
