Breast enhancement surgery is a type of body contouring procedure that reshapes the breasts by tightening the surrounding tissue and removing excess skin, resulting in firmer, fuller, younger-looking breasts. This cosmetic breast surgery usually is reserved for women who have lost the fullness and shape of their breasts due to breastfeeding, weight loss, aging, or gravity. Breast implants have been used for many years for breast augmentation surgeries and have been deemed safe. They come in two types, saline or silicone. Silicone implants are more often requested as they look and feel more natural in comparison to saline implants. Their smooth and round shape, otherwise known as the “gummy bear implants” imitates larger natural breasts. During your consultation, we will discuss your goals and desired outcome. Understanding your aesthetic wishes and expectations, will help Dr. Daw create the best procedure plan for you in regards to implant sizing, type of implant and surgical technique that would be used. At your consultation, Dr. Daw and his team will take your breast measurements in order to decide the width of the implants that should be used. Some baseline photos will also be taken at the time of consultation.
How Is Breast Enhancement Surgery Performed?
Typically, patients are to refrain from eating or drinking after midnight before the surgery. Dr. Daw and his team will give more detailed pre-surgical instruction at the time of booking the surgery. Performed while the patient is under general anesthesia, a breast lift typically takes about 2 – 4 hours, depending on the severity of laxity. The surgical technique used for breast enhancement typically falls within two categories, defined by the nature of the incision. The anchor technique (inverted-T) and the straight-line vertical incisions are the preferred methods. After making the incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed. The remaining skin is tightened, and the breasts are lifted and positioned to appear higher, younger, and healthier. In many cases, the size and shape of the areola are reconstructed to complement the new breast. Implants may be inserted in the breast if this was planned before surgery. We ask that patients do not drive on the day of the surgery due to the effects of post anesthesia. You will have small waterproof dressings in place that will protect the surgical incisions. Further post-care instructions will be given to you by the surgical nurse.
