What Is Scar Revision Treatment?
Scars are a common skin blemish, but in some cases, they may be a reminder of a traumatic, surgical, or accidental old wound or another issue that upset the skin's surface. While most scars aren't an issue, certain scars are unappealing and unsightly. Maybe they're too wide or too big, dark, bumpy, raised, or recessed. Depending on the location of the scar, the texture, and the color of the scar, surgical revision and excision, laser and plasma technology, and even dermal fillers can improve how the scar looks. Our expert team performs some scar revision treatments at Oak Dermatology in Naperville, Itasca, and Joliet, IL using the Alma Harmony XL PRO, Opus Plasma®, or Sciton Halo platforms.
How Is Scar Revision Performed?
Surgery to revise scars is often completed in Oak Dermatology using a local anesthetic or sedation based on the complexity of the treatment. For thick or bumpy scars, a shave excision technique may be used to level the scar, which relies on an electrosurgical smoothing of the skin. Larger scars or scars that are raised can be decreased in size using an elliptical incision and suturing the incision with a new, clean line. Bigger scars or contracture scars may require a skin graft or tissue expansion so that the old scar can be removed, allowing healthy skin and tissue to be sutured together.
In some cases, it is not the shape or size of the scar that is bothersome but the color or texture. Using the Harmony XL PRO, a state-of-the-art noninvasive laser treatment, can lessen the color and visibility of a scar and eliminate a surgical procedure. If the Opus Plasma device is selected, the fractional plasma technology can minimize flaws, like scars, and address facial lines and wrinkles. For treatments utilizing the Sciton Halo laser, ablative and non-ablative laser wavelengths are employed in a "hybrid" treatment that works on all skin types and for scars anywhere on the body, including sensitive areas on the face.
Lastly, if you have a depressed scar or it looks "pitted," we may suggest a filler treatment to produce a more natural, even surface.
It takes a keen and experienced eye to determine the proper treatment or combination of treatments to revise scars. Our surgeons are highly trained to select the right treatment for the best outcome.

Dr. Hsu is a top notch doctor. He really cares about his patients and takes a lot of time with you. I have been seeing him for years for all sorts of skin care needs ranging from acne, melasma, anti-aging, scars, general derm. He has has come through for me every time.
Loved How my Skin Looked - I've always had concerns with the "roughish" looking texture of my skin and a few acne scars. I went to Dr. Hsu for my Secret RF treatment, and I am happy with the results! So many friends and family have commented on how refreshed I look! My makeup goes on more smoothly and I definitely see more glowing. I would do it again and have recommended it to all my friends. Be sure you say yes to the numbing cream. Treatment takes about 30 mins, give or take.
