How Are Acne Scars Treated?
Dr. Jeffrey T.S. Hsu pioneered a unique and effective method that is exclusively practiced at Oak Dermatology for the treatment of acne scars. This proprietary technique produces almost flawlessly smooth skin results. This proven technique utilizes a multi-modality approach that reconstructs and revitalizes separate layers of the skin at a time, hence almost completely minimizing any traces of scarring.
Before your treatment, our skilled team will perform a comprehensive analysis of your skin before creating your personalized acne scar treatment plan. Before your session, your skin must be free of breakouts and flare-ups to prevent any possible infections and ensure that your results are comprehensive and stunning. Treatments depend on the type of acne scars, which include:
- Rolling scars – These scars give the skin a rolling or undulating appearance. We can improve the appearance of these depressed scars with temporary soft tissue fillers or the FDA-approved long-term filler Bellafill®. Fillers may also be combined with subcision, a surgical technique that releases the underlying fibrous scar tethers to pull it back to the surface of the skin. Our dermatologists may touch up the skin with a laser skin resurfacing technique.
- Boxcar scars – Small, clearly defined indentations in the skin, these scars are usually present on the temples and cheeks. Shallow boxcar scars can be treated with laser skin resurfacing, but deeper scars require a surgical technique.
- Shallow ice pick scars – The hardest acne scar to treat, ice pick scars are very narrow but very deep. These scars can slowly improve with the precise application of a chemical peel over several sessions. For very deep ice-pick scars, surgical removal is the most effective method and can be paired with laser skin resurfacing treatment to even out the skin. Patients notice a dramatic improvement 4 – 6 weeks after the procedure.
In addition to Dr. Hsu's proprietary method of scar treatment, we perform excision scar treatments. Excision involves surgically removing the scar tissue and is typically performed under local anesthesia. The treated area is then sutured. Depending on the type of scar and its appearance, a skin graft or a resurfacing treatment may be required following excision. While excision is a surgical procedure, the team at Oak Dermatology will take extra care to ensure that your scar is imperceptible following the procedure and any grafting or resurfacing. Additional treatment options may include the use of fillers, laser therapy, and a combination of multiple treatment varieties, depending on your needs and aesthetic goals.
Oak Dermatology Reviews
I 100% recommended Dr. Stephanie Tracey! She is the absolute best. Dr. Tracey makes you feel totally comfortable and helps you understand rather than just giving you information. She had helped my acne so much I feel like a completely different person! I am so thankful to call her my dermatologist
Oak Dermatology are the best! Staff was super accommodating and friendly. They took the right amount of time before and during the consultation. The nurse practitioner (Emily) who helped us with an acne issue was very attentive to my sons questions. Emily’s assistant (Esley) was extremely friendly and thorough both before and after the consultation. We had all the info we needed after the visit. Great practice, will definitely be coming here for myself and family.
I’ve found the best dermatology office in IL - it’s Oak Dermatology! Hannah is a life saver for my skin - diamond glow is where it’s at and her recs for products was on point! Rachel is amazing for botox and fillers - gentle, no bruising and an artist! Also consulted with Dr. Hsu for my acne scarring and not only was he on time but he was thorough (explained the available procedures - benefits, risks, downtime etc) and has excellent bed side manner. Referred my boyfriend to Oak Dermatology for a skin cancer exam and he was so happy with the service he received as well. I love this place! If you need a dermatologist or any type of cosmetic or aesthetic treatment you should book your appointment at Oak Dermatology ASAP! A+++++
After trying to get rid of my acne with over the counter products I decided to try going to a dermatologist. They got me on a routine and my acne is significantly better since I have stuck to it daily.
The best dermatology team I've ever had! Stephanie and everyone were so friendly and creative in getting my skincare back on track. I have no more acne and my Rosacea is getting better by the day. I genuinely couldn't ask for a better skincare team to have my back, literally!

About UsAcne Scar Treatment FAQs
Will my acne scars go away completely after treatment?
Our team is dedicated to helping you achieve the most pleasing results attainable and will work closely with you to reduce the visibility of your acne scars as completely as possible. In some cases, it may be possible to restore smooth, clear skin with virtually no trace of acne scars, while patients with deep and/or severe scars may achieve a dramatic improvement but still have some small evidence of scarring.
Can I get acne scar treatment if I have active acne?
Patients with current acne outbreaks or active flareups in the same areas as their acne scarring may need to wait until their skin has cleared up before undergoing acne scar treatment in order to prevent worsening symptoms and other complications, like infections. Our team will assess your skin prior to treatment and determine if and when acne scar treatment may be safe, appropriate, and effective for you.
Is acne scar treatment permanent?
The results of an acne scar treatment can be long-lasting and even permanent in some cases. However, this can vary from patient to patient based on a number of factors, including the patient's aftercare routine and which treatment was performed. When acne scars are treated with fillers, for example, the results may last for about 12-18 months, while surgical excision of more severe scarring can be used to permanently remove the scar.
