Four Skin Care Tips for Microneedling Recovery

Microneedling is an increasingly popular way to achieve smoother, younger-looking skin. But like any other aesthetic treatment, it's important to know how to care for your skin after undergoing treatment with our team. Below, dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey T.S. Hsu offers four tips to ensure a successful microneedling recovery and optimal results.

1. Keep your skin clean and hydrated
Microneedling involves creating microscopic punctures in the skin using a device that contains tiny needles. These punctures are designed to stimulate collagen production so your skin appears smoother and clearer over time. However, these punctures also leave your skin vulnerable to bacteria and other irritants. We recommend gently washing your skin with a mild cleanser twice daily and following up with a moisturizer or hydrating serum.
Are you unsure which products to use at home? Avoid anything with harsh ingredients or fragrances, as these may aggravate the healing areas. Dr. Hsu can provide a list of skin care products that are safe and effective for post-treatment use.
2. Avoid sun exposure
Microneedling treatment leaves your skin extra sensitive and more prone to sunburns, so plan your appointments around times when you can avoid direct sunlight. If it’s unavoidable, wear broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and reapply throughout the day. Too much sun exposure is known to cause scarring and skin discoloration, so be extra vigilant when it comes to protecting yourself. A wide-brimmed hat can provide additional coverage as needed.
3. Don't pick at your skin
Resist the temptation to pick at your skin or touch any of the treated areas. Doing so can disrupt collagen production and increase your risk of infection. If you do notice any scabs, resist the urge to remove them — they are a necessary part of the healing process and should be left alone. Dr. Hsu can provide more information on any reactions you may experience during microneedling recovery.
Here are some helpful ways to relieve itching or discomfort caused by microneedling treatment in Itasca and Joliet, IL:
- Apply a soothing cream or ointment to your skin
- Use a cool, covered compress for 15 minutes at a time
- Avoid cleansing with abrasive face washes or harsh exfoliants
4. Slowly introduce other skin care products
Microneedling results start to show once collagen production ramps up in the treatment area. Speed up the process by carefully introducing other skin care products, such as serums and hydrating masks. However, proceed with caution — start with gentle formulas that don’t contain fragrances or irritants, then slowly work your way up to more active solutions. Test each new product on a small area of skin to check for any adverse reactions first.
